#52 Meta's humble brag to end all humble brags

AND: Midjourney's update is AMAZING

Some people, just...wow. Take Rajesh Vishwas, a government official from Chhattisgarh state, India. Rajesh was taking a selfie. At a dam. He dropped his phone into the dam. So what did Rajesh do? Using his position as a government official, he ordered the dam be drained for its retrieval. Surprise surprise, it was too wet to work. ChatGPT could have told you that, Rajesh.

Three biggest stories if you’re in a rush

Voicebox, Meta’s new AI tool, is “a breakthrough in AI-powered speech generation” (apparently, according to Zuck). However, in the humble brag to end all humble brags, Meta also claims they shan’t be releasing Voicebox to the public yet - because it’s too clever, too dangerous, and could cause “unintended harm.”

At face value - this is a good thing. This is Meta being responsible, and not releasing potentially damaging AI tools for profit. You can’t help but wonder, though, how much of a marketing stunt this is. How soon will it be before Meta turns around and says, “Actually, we think it’s ready for public testing now.” The cynic in me says it’s not going to be all that long.

Creating and sticking to a budget is a pillar of overall business security and success. Hell, it’s a pillar for household success. From setting and achieving long-term goals (gotta secure that mortgage, or hire that new CTO) and short-term goals (Northern Lights, here we come - or buy Gladis a new office chair) budgeting keeps spending in check. So how to prioritize a business budget? “Invest in AI,” says 47% of top-level executives. CIOs, CEOs, and CTOs across the board are saying that AI is their biggest spend this year. Best start understanding how to interact with it, it’s going to be in every single line of work in the very near future.

There are software upgrades, like your VPN’s newest patch that offers a new server, and then there are Midjourney updates, which blow minds. V5.2, which is automatically loaded to user settings and takes effect as soon as you start /imagine - ing, has a suite of tools which, quite frankly, are jaw-dropping;

  • Zoom out tool - Auto-generate a greater scope for your image

  • Make square feature - Re-adjust landscape images for aspect ratios

  • Variation mode - Tweak certain nuances in an image

  • /Shorten - Get optimized prompt ideas from within the program

All in all, the new version of Midjourney is, to put it lightly, mental. If you’re not already a Midjourney-person, give it a whirl. You won’t be disappointed.

Acronyms, acronyms everywhere, what’s one to think?

Acronyms are a necessary evil in daily life, aren’t they just? Like, writing out Fear Of Missing Out every time you give in to peer pressure is just time-consuming. But no industry has more acronyms than AI. So, FYI, Andreessen Horowitz has kindly put together this AI glossary, so you’ll never need to type WDYM, LMK ever again.

AGI? Artificial General Intelligence - AI that is as capable as a human at any intellectual task.

ASI? Artificial Super Intelligence- AI that surpasses the capabilities of the human mind.
