Three biggest stories if you’re in a rush

With Google and Microsoft holding the AI spotlight over the last few months, Zuckerberg seemed to take a step backwards. True to form, though, and never to be outdone, Meta has just crashed onto the AI scene with their newest release SAM, “Segment Anything Model”. Meta describes their revolutionary AI software as:

“A promotable segmentation system with zero-shot generalization to unfamiliar objects and images, without the need for additional training”.

This basically means it can identify and “cut out“ (segment) any object, in any image, without previous training on what that specific object is. You can try the demo here.

Meta’s CEO (Mark Zuckerberg), CTO (Andrew Bosworth) and CPO (Chris Cox) are spending “most of their time working on a newly-formed A.I. team.” The main focus of Meta’s AI technology is to improve its advertising offering and will allow companies to “make images that work for different audiences”, instead of only using one image per campaign. As Meta’s main profit generator, advertising is expected to bring in 122 billion in 2023 - but more is needed.

Meta’s continued development of advanced AI systems continues despite calls to halt such projects, with Bosworth explaining:

“It’s very hard to stop progress and make the right decisions on what changes you would make…we have to understand how technology evolves before you can know how to protect and make it safe.”

Nvidia’s semiconductor chips are the workhorses powering the AI revolution, particularly the A100 chip. With global spending on semiconductor chips being more than $570 billion in 2022, it’s a lucrative industry to be #1. Which is no doubt why Google’s latest research paper claims their new 4th generation TPU chip is “1.7 times faster than Nvidia’s A100, and uses 1.5 times less power.”

That’s all well and good, if Nvidia hadn’t already launched a new chip of their own, which is far superior to their A100 - the H100 “Hopper”, which is:

“9 times faster for training AI models and up to 30 times faster for using the models after they’ve been trained.”

Back to the drawing board for Google.

Is it ignorance, or we just like using blinkers?
That’s humanity for ya

With so many leading AI experts saying we need to slow down AI development, it should be pretty clear that something less than desirable is around the corner.

But with entire nations saying they will not regulate AI development (ahem, India), and Meta releasing more advanced systems by the day, the relationship between humanity and AI is clear.

Use it until we lose it.
