Three biggest stories if you’re in a rush

Geoffrey Hinton, an AI and software engineer dubbed “The Godfather of AI”, left his part-time role as an AI development specialist at Google last week. Hinton says he left so he could;

“Talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly…however, I believe that the rapid progress of AI will transform society in ways we do not fully understand, and not all of the effects will be good.”

Hinton made foundational breakthroughs in AI and committed his life to enhancing the technology. Needless to say, it’s worrying that he now would instead raise awareness about the potential damage AI will cause, rather than continue developing it.

After internal, sensitive data was leaked by Samsung employees to ChatGPT last month, the tech giant is issuing a temporary block of any generative AI tools on any device owned by the company or which runs on internal servers. The company plans to have the block in place while it develops “security measures to create a secure environment for safely using generative AI to enhance employees’ productivity and efficiency.” This is because it is difficult to retrieve and delete any data on external servers, and that information shared with generative AI tools can be disclosed to other users.

IBM plans to suspend or slow hiring for back-office functions like human resources, which will affect approximately 26,000 non-customer-facing roles at the company. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna also revealed plans to pause hiring for another 7,800 positions, which AI could do:

“I could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period,” Krisha said in a Bloomberg interview.

The godfather of AI is worried about its negative effects, and some of the largest companies in the world are already slowing hiring…strange times a-comin’.
