#10 GPT-4 + Google's response

AND: Coca Cola storms in with Stable Diffusion

This week saw Google and OpenAI drop their most recent AI products.

Google’s latest AI seems to be a ChatGPT-like integration into their word documents, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 can give us recipes from a photo of our fridge.

While people appear underwhelmed by these developments, it highlights our high expectations for AI.

We don’t know what we want, but we want to be wowed.

GPT-4 & GOOGLE’S RESPONSE

For now, AI seems to continue to streamline the repetitive drudgery from many office-based job roles - which is where the money is.

ChatGPT-4 is here.

So is Google’s latest update to their workspace.

But from a C-suite level, all anyone is talking about is money:

Dan Taylor, Google’s vice president of global ads:

We haven’t figured out how to make money from Bard (Google’s chatbot).”

Jared Spataro, Microsoft executive:

We will experiment with how to integrate ads into the (Bing search) results.”

So while these companies try to figure out how to get more money from chatbots and search, they’re doubling down on software - by integrating AI into programs businesses pay for.

With Google’s latest update to Gmail and Google Docs, the AI helps users draft emails, write job descriptions, and develop articles, all with a single prompt.

Basically, an integrated ChatGPT.

OpenAI and Microsoft’s latest release, the long-awaited ChatGPT-4, shows a greater capacity for improved factual accuracy in answers, image recognition, and extended text.

For instance, users can upload an image of their fridge to GPT-4. The AI can analyze the image and suggest recipes accordingly - pretty incredible when you think about it.

Furthermore, both Google and Microsoft clearly recognize the desire for businesses and programmers to build unique and customizable AI applications.

They also understand the limitations to doing so - exclusively trained engineers and supercomputers - resources available to Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, which other companies won’t have for years.

Therefore, both companies are heavily investing in AI app builders, in Google’s case, “PaLM API” and “MakerSuite”, with Microsoft’s counterpart called “Generative AI App Bilder”.

As Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, says:

“This generation of AI will have a profound effect on every industry”.

Once the dust begins to settle from Google’s and Microsoft’s AI battle, we’ll start to see the true effects of the AI summer.
