#12 Disclaimer Alert! This might be wrong

AND: Drunk drivers get caught

Google makes Bard more widely available to US and UK users - but wants users to understand that the software is an experiment and that users should use the chatbot at their own discretion.

It seems that you, the user, are responsible for Google’s and Microsoft’s products.

DISCLAIMER ALERT: THIS CHATBOT MIGHT BE WRONG

F* around and find out

After the launch of GPT-4 last week, Google has started making its equivalent, Bard, more widely available to US and UK users.

But in the true spirit of this AI revolution, Google persistently reminds Bard’s users that “Bard is an experiment.”

As mentioned in previous issues of The AI Plug, the safe development of AI systems depends on ethical decisions by tech giants such as Google and Microsoft.

However, Google constantly tells Bard’s users that the program is in its infancy, with disclaimers at every stage of the user experience:

  • “Bard will not always get it right”

  • “Bard will get better with your feedback”

  • “Bard may display inaccurate of offensive information that doesn’t represent Google’s views”

  • “Bard is still in its experimental phase. Catting with it and rating its responses will help improve the experience”

Rolling out AI products that will inevitably offend their users and provide inaccurate information which “doesn’t reflect the thoughts or opinions” of the incumbent companies seems to be a tenant of this AI revolution.

What’s more important, perhaps, is the fact that whatever input users give Bard and other chatbots, such as GPT, will be used as training material.

Many users might not be aware of this fact - that if they share sensitive information with these chatbots, that information is stored and used to train the system - meaning that information is available somewhere, somehow, to other parties.

So perhaps, as an added disclaimer to protect users, Google and Microsoft should be making it more clear that USERS SHOULD NOT SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION with these chatbots instead of only protecting themselves.

As AI becomes more integral to routine daily behavior, like using search engines and surfing the internet, users must take responsibility for themselves and learn how to safely interact with these powerful systems - because it seems the companies rolling out the software aren’t prepared to take responsibility for their own actions.
