#8 ChatGPT-4 is Davinci

AND: AI help for domestic abuse survivors

ChatGPT-3 took the world by storm, smashing records and becoming the fastest-ever growing app, accruing over 100 million users in just two months.

Naturally, people have wondered when the upgrade to GPT-3 will be released, and what it’ll look like - also what it’ll be called.

Well, according to one German Microsoft executive, it’s sometime this week.

And it’s called Davinci.

CHATGPT-4 IS HERE…OR NOT?

How we see the world reacting when OpenAI releases ChatGPT-4, AKA Davinci

Speculation as to what OpenAI’s next product will look - and what it’ll be capable of - has us all holding our breath.

GPT-3 blew minds when it launched late last year.

What’s funny is how quickly we’ve adapted to having it in our daily lives, how fast we’ve normalized having such a powerful tool at our fingertips.

While some downplay the significance of ChatGPT-3 - saying it’s “useful only in some narrow domains, like computer programming or to write rhymes for light verse” - this tool is the poster child of the current AI revolution.

It has shown what’s possible.

It’s provided the framework for developers to grow and build their own next-generational models, and it’s inspiring people to do so.

And moreover, there’s a bigger and better variant just around the corner.

One source from The New York Times speculated OpenAI’s next product might come as soon as the first quarter 2023 - which would mean that it’ll be released within the next 17 days (as of the time of writing).

Moreover, at an AI kickoff event on March 9th, German Microsoft CTO Andreas Braun said:

We will introduce GPT-4 next week, there we will have multimodal models that will offer completely different possibilities - for example, videos,

The Microsoft employees presented next-gen large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 and its ilk as an upcoming “disruptive force for companies” - one that will require significant restructuring and training.

HOWEVER!!

Strangely, in a communication with Science and Technology News Platform Futurism, a spokesperson for OpenAI has confirmed that “OpenAI has not announced any timing for GPT-4.”

Which does indeed beg the question - what was Andres talking about? And what is the official relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI going forward…surely those two should align themselves regarding such important public announcements.

We know Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and has initiated a multi-year investment plan in January 2023 for $10 billion. We also know those investments cost OpenAI $92 billion capped-profit share with Microsoft, but surely handling public relations still rests with OpenAI themselves?

Perhaps this premature GPT-4 announcement is a sneaky way of building up hype (it’s working), or perhaps it’s just a very uncharacteristic blunder from Microsoft.

Time will tell, but what is for sure, is that when the next version of GPT-3 goes live, it’ll melt faces.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP 💭

It seems OpenAI’s next product, the much-anticipated ChatGPT-4, has a name:

Davinci - with much larger bandwidth and potential than what ChatGPT-3 currently has. Click to read the entire thread 👇

YOU’RE NOT FOOLING ANYONE

Plenty of people have been doing - just stop now.

1 IN 3 WOMEN…

Sophia.chat helps people suffering from abuse 24/7, anonymously, worldwide.

Worldwide, 1 in 3 women experiences domestic abuse and violence. There are well over 50,000 yearly deaths caused by partners or family members.

This plague is perpetuated by a lack of governmental and NGO resources available for supporting and helping sufferers, leading to abuse survivors remaining alone, isolated and vulnerable.

In an effort to help survivors of domestic abuse, Spring ACT has launched Sophia, an entirely confidential, anonymous chatbot which leaves no digital trace.

Spring ACT CEO, Rhiana Spring, says Sophia can guide and empower survivors to “gather evidence, assess your rights, and learn about your options.”

The isolation which domestic abuse causes is a throbbing part of the problem - not having anyone to confide in and ask for advice.

The free and consistent availability of a resource like Sophia could make a substantial difference to people in distress, providing an untraceable and impartial source for guidance.

While we prefer to report from the sidelines, regarding this issue - if you know of someone experiencing domestic abuse, or are in such a situation yourself, consider using Sophia to help. We’re thinking of you, and wish there was more we could do.
