#41 "Before we're all extinct"

The one-sentence warning to humanity

“Before we’re all extinct.”

Yeesh. That’s the new single-sentence warning AI leaders such as Sam Altman are giving the rest of the industry. With things moving this fast, there’s no telling where this AI train will stop.

On that happy note, congratulations Jessy for winning last issue’s “AI or Real?” lucky dip.

Let’s dive in.

Three biggest stories if you’re in a rush

“Mr. President- there’s been a bombing at the Pentagon.”

Fortunately, those are words that Olivia Dalton, principal deputy press secretary for the Biden administration, didn’t need to say last week. Dalton did, however, need to connect with the Pentagon and National Security Council to double-check.

Last week’s AI hoax image of an explosion at The Pentagon, which caused the $500B dip in the S&P, is just one of many that the press team at the White House now deals with on a daily basis.

“As the technology for creating fake videos and images improve, it’s important for the media and the public to be aware of this trend, which we expect to grow, if not exponentially,” said White House assistant press secretary Robyn Patterson. With talk of a new federal agency to oversee AI technology, managing misinformation outbreaks is fast becoming a priority, one that seems necessary if the integrity of democracy is to, well, not totally collapse.

How often have you flicked through old family albums and wished that Christmas shot from ‘98 wasn’t so blurry? Or that you could do something about that terrible glare? Or, while watching Harry Potter, thought how wonderful it would be to have animated portraits?

Well, MyHeritage’s new app, Reimagine, is here to preserve and upgrade old memories better than ever before - and even bring them to animated life. The new app’s “main focus is to help users easily import printed photos stored in albums, then touch them up by improving their resulting, fixing scratches and creases, and even restoring color in black-and-white photos and animating faces.”

Given MyHeritage is a family tree, and DNA testing service, upgrading old photos is a pretty savvy value-add. And if they can Howgarts-up our pasts in the process, who are we to complain?

If you’re still to buy some AI stock, we won’t blame you for feeling left out. With Nvidia now officially the first $1 trillion semiconductor company, C3.ai up an incredible 16.7%, and Qualcomm up 3.7%, we understand the feeling of “damn, I’ve missed the AI stock train.”

But fear not. With new advances and technology coming fast, investors still continue to jump aboard the AI Express. While thoughts of “when will this bubble burst” are understandable, the diverse application of AI technology in every facet of human existence can not be denied. While we’re not suggesting you go and load up on any old AI stock, we are saying that this market still clearly has a lot of room for growth. DYOR.
