Three biggest stories if you’re in a rush

Given the stir Covid caused, we wouldn’t blame you for flinching when you hear words like “superbug” and “antibiotic,” (dare we say “vaccine?”)

What if, though, we told you that thanks to an AI algorithm, researchers at MIT and McMaster University discovered a new form of antibiotic that kills drug-resistant bacteria?

Happily, that’s what we’re telling you.

Acinetobacter baumannii, a species of drug-resistant bacteria, is often found in hospitals. It leads to lethal illnesses such as pneumonia and meningitis - and up until now, its been utterly resistant to our medicines. Using a machine-learning model trained to evaluate the growth inhibition properties of compounds for A. baumannii, researchers identified the new drug that, if developed for human use, can help revolutionize antibiotic treatments, including treating drug-resistant bacteria….which would mean they’re no-longer drug resistant…

Problems with AI:

#1 is indisputable. #2 remains to be seen. #3 isn’t a problem, according to Eric Schmidt, former Google Chief Exec.

Why? Because the current birth rate in developed countries (namely the US and Europe) means there won’t be enough working-age adults to support the aging population in twenty years. So, Schmidt argues, the fact that AI is revolutionizing the job market is something society needs to keep moving forward. All hail The Machines.

AI does more than makes fake but convincing images - it also makes people filthy rich. Particularly, anyone who owns stock in Nvidia, the company whose chips are powering this AI storm (along with other AI chip stocks, like AMD, ASML, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.). Nvidia shares soared more than 24% last Thursday, closing in on the trillion-dollar valuation mark at $939B. In 2023 alone, Nvidia’s price has more than doubled. Could still be worth a flutter…
