Three biggest stories if you’re in a rush

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names, they’ll truly kill me.” Internet abuse and online trolling is no joke. Things people say to each other, to complete strangers, behind a keyboard can make Joseph Stalin seem like a reasonable human.

But athletes, actors, artists - anyone in the public limelight put up with trolling on a totally different level. Win or lose, people feel they have the right to hurl abuse, threats, and obscenities at public figures. But finally, as they did at Dunkirk, The French have decided to stand up for what’s right.

At this year’s French Open (Roland Garros 2023), event organizers are offering players AI protection from social media abuse in the for of The Bodyguard - an app that links to one’s social media accounts, and uses predictive AI algorithms to filter abusive comments on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Tiktok and Discord. It does this for real-time comments in under 200 milliseconds

“The aim is to let nothing slip through the net, while being careful not to be too censorial.”.

Internet abuse, of course, reaches far further than the professional tennis court. So instead of trying to ignore hurtful comments, how about you just filter them out?

Diversify your portfolio,” offered the wise financial management guru.

Shan’t,” replied the investor, as he loaded up purely on AI stocks, sure that the AI boom would bring him prosperity beyond imagination.

Indeed, the current AI startup boom is attracting priority attention from more than 70% of enterprise leaders. With VCs behind parent companies like Salesforce, Workday, OpenAI, Amazon, and Solana throwing millions into grants to help develop generative AI products, the sentiment is undoubtedly positive for AI development going forward.

Brad Smith, Microsoft head exec, wants the US to keep pace with global AI regulation, recently saying:

I was in Japan three weeks ago, and they have a national AI strategy. The world is moving forward. Let’s make sure that the United States at least keeps pace with the rest of the world.”

Particularly regarding mimicking humans, creating deep fakes, or spreading false news, Smith thinks US regulators must move quickly so that in 2024 and beyond, there are guardrails in place that protect society from the potential harms posed by AI.

Tip of the Day ⚒️
Something you should know

If you’re like the other 4 billion people who use Google daily, then the launch of its new AI search engine might interest you.

At the moment, it’s not built-in to the search engine. Users must turn it on, but only those with access to Google Labs and who are Google One Premium (2+TB) subscribers can do so. (These measures will likely drop off soon - but if you want to try and apply, follow these steps):

Once you’re into those services, go to Labs, look for the SGE card, click it to on, and agree. You’ll now be amongst the first people in the world to access Google’s new AI generative search experience.

If you’re not a Google One subscriber, but want access to the Google AI search ASAP, we strongly recommend signing up to the Labs Waitlist, as these users will almost certainly get it before others.
